Safe Routes

The Burlingame School District has received funding for its Safe Routes to School program from the San Mateo County Office of Education's Safe Routes program. Our grant award is from July 2019 through June 2020 and is provided through the City/County Association of Governments of San Mateo County (C/CAG).

Burlingame's  Safe Routes program will focus on the following projects:

  • Pedestrian and bicyclist safety education and programs
  • BIS Bike Shop's Recyce-Your-Bike and Adopt-A-Bike programs and mechanical bike services.
  • Participation in Burlingame's Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee (BPAC)
  • Promote walking and biking to school as alternatives to family vehicles
  • Engage student's interests in people-powered concepts through promotion of our smoothie bikes
  • Promote safe walking and biking through special events: Bike Warrior Rodeo, Commuter Safety Training, and Walk and Bike to School events.
  • Provide support to school sites towards improving pedestrian safety infrastructure

SCHOOL TRAFFIC RELIEF

We all are impacted by school traffic, whether we are trying to get our children to school, trying to get to work, living in the neighborhood, or just passing through during pick-up and drop-off activities. Here are a number of suggestions to help limit the congestion and get your child to/from school in a safe manner:

  • If you live within walking distance of the school, have your child walk or bike to school. The exercise is good for them and stimulates brain power.
  • If you have younger children, then consider walking with them. The exercise will do the whole family good.
  • Form or participate in a Walking School Bus. The Safe Routes program can offer training and resources needed to start a Walking School Bus Program at your child's school.
  • If your children are older or skilled on their bike, have them bike to school. Burlingame has established bike routes that serve our schools. Be sure to explore a safe route beforehand and to ride it with your child a few times so they know the route and you are comfortable with their riding skills.
  • Attend the annual Bike Warrior Rodeo. The BSD Safe Routes program offers a bike skills training course. During this bike skills challenge students will learn the rules of the road and how to be a better defensive biker.
  • Park and Walk - park a few blocks from the school and walk the last few blocks with your kids. Good way to stretch the legs.
  • Start a School Car Pool. There are a number of resources to help you find and manage your school car pools. You can use the mobile KangaDo parent helper app (iPhone and Android) that helps not only with finding and managing school car pools, but also with finding babysitters, play dates, and more.
  • If you have to drive, then be sure to go with the flow and obey all traffic rules. Drive as if your kids live here - because they do. Here are traffic flow maps for each school to help keep the congestion moving in an orderly manner:

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION - YOUTH CLIPPER PASSES

Clipper Youth cards allow students to board the public bus (or train, BART, or MUNI) with the swipe of a card. Parents and guardians can download an application for a Clipper Youth Card at www.clippercard.com/discounts and submit it via regular mail or bring it to the SamTrans office (1250 San Carlos Ave. in San Carlos). Below are the BSD schools served by specific bus routes, or you can find the full list of all SMC schools served. For help via phone please call 1-800-660-4287.

TRANSPORTATION DATA

Thank you to all the parents that completed the Fall 2019  Parent Transportation Survey (there is still time to submit a survey), and to all the students that participated in the Classroom Transportation Tally. This data is useful not only to the District in making Safe Routes to School program decisions, but also county transportation advocates. See how this data is being used in this San Mateo County Safe Routes to School Executive Summary. Congratulations to those parents and students who helped reduce family vehicle trips to school by 10% and increase walking and biking to school by 27% and 142%, respectively. If you would like to see BSD-specific data, please contact the SRTS Coordinator.
