Transitional Kindergarten

The Perfect Start for Your Four-Year-Old

A Thriving, Proven Program

Transitional Kindergarten has been a cornerstone of Burlingame School District for over a decade, and it continues to grow! What started as a single classroom in 2012 has blossomed into a vibrant program serving students across twelve classes at all six of our elementary school sites. This remarkable expansion reflects the program's success and our commitment to providing developmentally appropriate learning experiences for our youngest learners. If your child will turn four by September 1, they're eligible to join this established, high-quality program.

A Rich, Well-Rounded Learning Experience

TK offers a full-day, extended-hour program (6.5 hours) designed specifically for four-year-olds. Your child will thrive in a classroom that balances structured learning with joyful play. The curriculum includes literacy development, phonemic awareness, and hands-on math through everyday math exploration. Beyond academics, students engage in art, STEAM projects, and science investigations. The day is thoughtfully paced with multiple recess times to build gross motor skills, fine motor practice, and movement activities. Your child will also enjoy weekly music, physical education, and library, plus dedicated time for social-emotional learning through programs like Second Step and Kimochis. Throughout the day, there's plenty of circle time, literacy and math groups, and at least two free choice periods where children follow their curiosity and joy.

Expert Teachers, Continuous Growth, and Easy Access

Every TK classroom is led by a credentialed teacher with specialized training—holding a Multiple Subject Credential plus 24 Early Childhood Education units or a Child Development Teacher Permit. These passionate educators create a safe, nurturing environment where children develop academically, behaviorally, and emotionally. As a two-year program, TK flows seamlessly into kindergarten, so your child benefits from continuity and familiar relationships. With classes available at all six school sites, quality early childhood education is accessible to families throughout our community.

Program Information

Transitional Kindergarten is established under California Senate Bill (SB) 1381, which amended California Education Code Sections 46300, 48000, and 48010 to create this program beginning in the 2012–2013 school year. TK is available to all children who will have their fourth birthday by September 1 of the school year, per Education Code 48000. It is the first year of a two-year kindergarten program using a modified, age and developmentally appropriate curriculum. Students enrolled in TK are required to complete both years of the program.
